How to make Easy crochet Jacket for newborn, in today’s post we will learn a very easy yet elegant crochet jacket for newborn. This is yet another project from Cm-iH one day crochet project series. This crochet jacket is easy to make so a new mom can make it in baby’s nap time or it could be a beautiful gift for your loved ones.

In this post, I am showing how to make crochet Jacket for newborn with step-by-step photos, instruction card (which includes written instruction & diagram) and video tutorial. Choose whichever way you enjoy! 🙂
I have used a bit thick yarn for this project and bulky yarn is in trend these days but you can make it with any type of yarn you like. Check your gauge and adjust stitches accordingly.

Abbreviations used:
dc3tog – double crochet 3 together
dc2tog – double crochet 2 together
Gauge:
4 double crochet = 1″ or 2.5 cm
2 double crochet rows = 1″ or 2.5 cm

Finished Size :
Circumference – 44 cm
Height – 13 cm
Height below sleeve – 7 cm
Pattern Grading:
If you want reduce or increase the size of finished jacket then increase or decrease stitches in multiples of 3 + 2.
Tip :
- If you are comfortable then use chain-less double crochet to get a neater look. Consider Ch 3 as chain-less double crochet at the beginning of each round.
- Use standing double crochet trick while connecting yarn for back and side portion to have seamless look.
Material:
Description:
Start with Light color yarn. Make chain 80.
R1: Sk ch 3, 1 dc in each ch. (78 sts) 
R2: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 2 sts, next diagonal patterns should be worked only in front loop. Diagonal pattern- (sk 1, 1 dc in next 2 sts, 1dc in skipped st) repeat diagonal pattern till last 3 sts, 1 dc in last 3 sts each. (78 sts)
Diagonal pattern worked in front loop from working side (wrong side)-
Diagonal pattern from opposite side (right side)-
1 dc in last 3 sts-
Completed 2nd row-
R3: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 2 sts, make diagonal pattern worked in back loop till last 3 sts, 1 dc in last 3 sts each. (78 sts)
Diagonal pattern worked in back loop-
Completed 3rd row-
R4: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 2 sts, make diagonal pattern worked in front loop till last 6 sts,
dc3tog in diagonal pattern worked in front loop,
dc2tog, 1 dc in last st. ( 75 sts)
R5: Ch 3, dc2tog,
dc3tog in diagonal pattern worked in back loop,
then complete the row with diagonal pattern worked in back loop till last 3 sts, 1 dc in last 3 sts. (72 sts)
Front left side of Jacket-
R1: Ch 3, dc2tog, dc3tog in diagonal pattern worked in front loop, 2 diagonal patterns worked in front loop, 1 dc in next 3 sts.
R2: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 2 sts, 1 diagonal pattern worked in back loop, dc3tog in diagonal pattern worked in back loop, dc2tog, 1 dc in last st.
R3: Ch 3, dc2tog, dc3tog in diagonal pattern worked in front loop, 1 dc in last 3 sts.
R4: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 2 sts, dc3tog.
R5: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 3 sts.
This completes front left side of the Jacket, fasten off and cut the yarn. Sew in the end.
Back side of Jacket-
Skip two diagonal patterns (6 sts) from front left side of the jacket and connect yarn to next st.
I prefer standing double crochet method, you can you any method convenient to you.
R1, R3 & R5: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 2 sts, 8 diagonal patterns worked in front loop, 1 dc in next 3 sts.
R2 & R4: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 2 sts, 8 diagonal patterns worked in back loop, 1 dc in next 3 sts.
This completes back side of the Jacket, fasten off and cut the yarn. Sew in the end.
Front right side of Jacket-
Skip two diagonal patterns (6 sts) from front back side of the jacket and connect yarn to next stitch.
Similar like left side.
R1: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 diagonal patterns worked in front loop, dc3tog in diagonal pattern, dc2tog, 1 dc in last st.
R2: Ch3, dc2tog, dc3tog in diagonal pattern worked in back loop, 1 diagonal pattern worked in back loop, 1 dc in next 3 sts.
R3: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 2 sts, dc3tog in diagonal pattern worked in front loop, dc2tog, 1 dc in last st.
R4: Ch 3, dc2tog, 1 dc each in last 3 sts.
R5: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 3 sts.
This completes front right side of the Jacket, fasten off and cut the yarn. Sew in the end.
Now fold the sides in front and sew them to back portion.
Make a yarn button with contrast yarn and attach it to jacket. Learn how to make your own safe yarn button HERE. Connect button in second row of front left side of the jacket.
Button hole- Connect yarn to top of second row of front right side of jacket. Make ch 6, sl st in bottom of second row. Make ch 1, 8 sc in chain loop. Slip stitch in first ch. Fasten off and cut yarn. Sew in the tail yarn.
