How to crochet Traditional Granny square
How to crochet Traditional Granny square free pattern, is a traditional pattern in Granny square. In previous post we have seen modern granny squares- Dual color modern granny square and Granny square with Puff stitch. In today’s post we will learn a very attractive granny square made with vibrant color yarns; with step-by-step photos, instruction card (which includes chart diagram) and video tutorial.
This traditional granny square looks good when worked with vibrant color yarns for each row. I have made these granny squares for jute storage wall hanging, so I have used colored jute. This has made these squares bit stiff but you use acrylic or any other yarn you will get nice soft squares.
Usually these traditional granny squares are made with loop of chain in the beginning but for my project I didn’t want any hole in the center so I have started with magic ring. You can make loop of chain 5 and then start the same pattern described below.

Abbreviations used:
ch sp – chain space
Gauge:
2 dc rounds = 1″ or 2.5 cm

Finished Size :
Granny square size – 5″x 5″ or 13 x13 cm
Tip :
- If you are comfortable then use chain-less double crochet to get a neater look. Consider Ch 3 as chain-less double crochet at the beginning of each round.
- Use standing double crochet trick while changing color to have seamless look.
Material:
Description:
Start with yellow color yarn.
R1: Ch 3, 2 dc in magic ring, *ch 1, 3 dc* repeat * to * 2 times more, Sl st in first st. (12 sts, 4 ch sp)
Cut yellow color yarn and sew in tail.
Connect green color yarn in any of ch sp.
R2: Ch 3, 2 dc in same ch sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same ch sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch sp)- ref as “corner”. *ch 1, corner* repeat * to* 1 more time, Sl st in ch. ( 4 corners, 4 ch sp)
Cut green color yarn and sew in tail.
Connect pink color yarn in any of ch sp.
R3: Ch 3, 2 dc in same ch sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same ch sp, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch sp, ch 1, corner in next ch sp* repeat * to* entire round, Sl st in ch. ( 4 corners, 4 groups of 3 dc, 8 ch sp)
Cut pink color yarn and sew in tail.
Connect orange color yarn in any of ch sp.
R4: Ch 3, 2 dc in same ch sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same ch sp, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch sp, ch 1, corner in next ch sp* repeat * to* entire round, Sl st in ch. ( 4 corners, 8 groups of 3 dc, 12 ch sp)
Cut orange color yarn and sew in tail.
Connect brown color yarn in any of ch sp.
R5: Ch 3, 2 dc in same ch sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same ch sp, *(1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch sp)- complete side, corner in next ch sp* repeat * to* entire round, Sl st in ch. ( 4 corners, 21 sts)
Cut brown color yarn and sew in tail. This completes our beautiful, vibrant Traditional Granny square.
