First of all, let me confess something here! For years I had no idea that there are different kinds of terms used for crochet hook size. I only knew that they vary in diameter and its written on the hook. It’s only few years ago when we moved to Bahrain and I visited DAISO Japan store here; I found they had numbers. That is when I did some research and learnt that there are different terms used for crochet hook, in many different countries. So I have made my own chart for reference.

It becomes extremely important to have these crochet hook conversion charts handy, specially if you are referring online patterns. American crochet hooks has a letter and a number therefore if you are outside America and referring pattern written in American standards, this hook sizes can be incredibly confusing!

For example, the crochet hook size ‘H’, which is sometimes called as ‘size 8’. It is 5 mm in diameter, which as you can notice, doesn’t clearly line up with the number ‘8’.

Broadly there are two types of hooks-

Crochet Hooks- This kook is used to crochet with yarn. These hooks are made with various materials.

Steel Hooks- These hooks have same anatomy as crochet hooks but they have very small head to crochet with thin threads. Usually these hooks are made with steel.
