How to crochet around the posts or how to work Front post double crochet (FP dc) and Back Post double crochet (BP dc)- Here is the yet another crochet tutorial post for beginners with video tutorials, showing how to crochet around the post and you can master this with little practice.

Front-&-Back-post-double-crochet

Crochet around the posts is a technique which creates a 3 dimensional effect. I am showing the tutorial with double crochet but you can use this method for single or triple crochet also. These crochet around the posts stitch can be worked either the front or the back of the post. If worked in front post for series we get dominant vertical line where as worked in back gives dominant horizontal line. And if we use it alternatively, we can get a nice vertical ridges which gives elasticity to the fabric. So we have lots of options to choose from depending on our desired results.

So lets see two ways to crochet around the posts-

Front Post double crochet-

To work a front post double crochet, take yarn over, insert your hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second double crochet of the row below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches.

The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the double crochet that you’re working around.

Front-post-double-crochet

Complete the stitch (shown with double crochet above) as usual. The completed stitch will be raised in front of the rest of the work.

Back Post double crochet-

Take yarn over, insert your hook from back to front between the posts of the first and second double crochet in the row below, and then from front to back again between the posts of the second and third stitches.

The hook should now be positioned horizontally in front of the double crochet that you’re working around.

Back-post-double-crochet

Complete the stitch (shown with double crochet above) as usual. The completed stitch will be stayed below the surface of the rest of the work.
